Numerical Modelling of Focussed Wave Hydrodynamics and Focused Wave-structure Interaction with REEF3D

General irregular sea state can generate very steep waves which can induce unpleasant dynamic wave loading to the structures. Sometimes these wave loads exceed upper design limits of the structure thus resulting in the failures of the structures. Sub-structure of wind turbines, offshore oil platforms and ships are some of the structures which needs more attention in designing because of larger individual and economic risks associated with these structures. Focused waves are a group of waves used to investigate high steep wave kinematics in a numerical or in an experimental model. Each wave component's phase angle is tuned to get focused at a particular time and location. REEF3D is an open source numerical model governed by mass and momentum balance of Navier Stokes equation. This study uses REEF3D numerical model to simulate and investigate the focused wave kinematics and nature of the focused wave-structure interaction. REEF3D simulation cases are validated with available experimental data on focused waves. Two-dimensional studies are carried-out to investigate focused wave steepness kinematic correlations. Later vertical cylinder in a three dimensional domain to study wave structure interaction kinematics and wave forces. There are some signicant ndings in this thesis which improved the understanding of focused wave modeling in REEF3D.
